Summary

"A Pail of Air" by Fritz Leiber is a science fiction story about a family's fight to live after a dark star throws Earth into a never-ending night. The story shows how tough people can be as it follows a young boy, his parents, and his sister as they try to survive in a super cold, empty world. They live in a place they call the Nest and have to go out into the freezing darkness to find air and other things they need. One day, the boy notices a strange light, making the family scared about what else might be out there. However, their fear turns to hope when they meet other people from Los Alamos who are using atomic energy to stay alive, offering them a chance for a better future together. The story shows courage, the importance of family, and the desire to live, even when things look hopeless.
