Summary

"The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, Volume 1" by Jefferson Davis is a historical narrative where the former Confederate President defends the South's choice to leave the United States, claiming it was a matter of constitutional rights. The story opens by setting the stage to reshape public opinions about why the Civil War happened, framing the Confederate actions as a proper use of their power as independent states, while reviewing the political climate that led to the war, with emphasis on states' rights and the core ideas on which the country was founded. Slavery appears as a thread in a larger struggle for control and fair representation, as it moves towards a complete review of the events that started, and continued through the Civil War.
