Summary

"Man and Maid" by E. Nesbit is a story set in the early 1900s that follows Lawrence Sefton after he receives an unexpected inheritance from his great-uncle, which dramatically changes his life. Leaving his cycling tour behind, Lawrence returns home to deal with the inheritance, which requires him to visit the rumored-to-be-haunted Sefton Manor with his cousin Selwyn, so they can decide who will keep the estate. Upon arriving at the manor, he meets a mysterious young woman adds a layer of intrigue, and as they explore the mansion's eerie grounds and ghostly stories, their budding relationship infuses the narrative with romance amidst the unfolding mysteries of the manor.

About the Author

Edith Nesbit was an English writer and poet, who published her books for children as E. Nesbit. She wrote or collaborated on more than 60 such books. She was also a political activist and co-founder of the Fabian Society, a socialist organisation later affiliated to the Labour Party.
