"Perchance to Dream" by Richard Stockham is a science fiction novella that tells the story of Twenty-three, a worker in a controlled dystopian city. Twenty-three feels empty and longs for something more while using a dream machine, but his unsettling dreams make him question the monotonous reality he and the others live. When he receives alternative dream cards from a mysterious man, he sees a chance for freedom. Driven by the urge to escape, Twenty-three goes on a journey, breaking free from the dream machine to find a richer life outside the city, where nature thrives, and he discovers the importance of dreams and the pursuit of real freedom.
