Summary

"There is a Tide" by J. C. Snaith is a story set at the beginning of the 20th century about a determined girl named Mame Durrance from Iowa, who arrives in England with huge dreams of becoming a writer. The story follows Mame trying to fit into a new place which is a challenge for her. While there she meets Detective Addelsee, who causes more challenge for Mame, and the story highlights the differences between cultures, what it means to find yourself, and the drive to reach for your dreams. The book opens with Mame getting off the train in England, feeling mixed emotions as she takes in the misty scenery, and things get intense right away when she meets the detective who brings up her past. Mame is strong and defends herself, showing everyone she is a serious woman with goals, and it sets the scene for a journey full of struggles and success as she chases success in a new world.

About the Author

John Collis Snaith was an English first-class cricketer active 1900 who played for Nottinghamshire. He was born in Nottingham; died in Hampstead. He was also a novelist, writing as J. C. Snaith, and played in the Authors Cricket Club alongside fellow authors A. A. Milne and P. G. Wodehouse among others.
