Summary

"A Statement of Facts Tending to Establish an Estimate of the True Value and Present State of Vaccination" by Sir Gilbert Blane is a historical scientific work that evaluates the real impact of vaccination on the deadly disease, smallpox. The publication uses numbers and real-world observations to demonstrate how vaccination greatly lowered death rates after it was invented. The book shows different sets of data collected over many years portraying smallpox deaths before and after vaccination started, even comparing vaccination to inoculation. Blane points out that vaccination clearly lowered the amount of smallpox deaths and argues that vaccination should be used everywhere to completely wipe out the disease, despite disagreement and doubt. The book pushes for public health programs to promote vaccination as a necessary tool in the fight against one of the most devastating diseases in history.
