Summary

"How old are fossils?" by Sharat Kumar Roy unveils the secrets of age estimation for fossils and ancient life, written as a geology guide for museum visitors and curious minds. The book explains how scientists figure out the age of fossils and the rocks they're in, clearing up a confusing subject. Roy explores how ideas about the Earth's age have changed over time, contrasting old beliefs with modern science. He discusses methods like looking at how sediment builds up and how salt gathers, but emphasizes how studying radioactivity dramatically improved age estimations. In the end, Roy makes it clear that life on Earth began far earlier than most people realize, guided by evidence from paleontology, consistent natural processes, and the complex connection between evolution and geological time periods.
