Summary

"Sodom and Gomorrah, Texas" by R. A. Lafferty is a funny and strange novel from the late 20th century about people and ideas. The story follows Manuel, a census taker who gets things hilariously wrong, and his job of counting people and strange creatures in a place called Sodom. Because of his funny mistakes, he creates a crazy census full of made-up creatures. As the story goes on, Manuel gets mixed up in events that make him question what is real, causing a crisis in a nearby town when the population count becomes impossibly high, even though there are no actual new people. The story ends in a chaotic mess, using humor to make points about human misunderstanding, how silly government rules can be, and how fantasy and reality mix in our daily lives.
