"Madame Gilbert's Cannibal" by Bennet Copplestone is a story set in the early 1900s about a woman named Madame Gilbert as she leaves her spy work during a war era and begins a rare quest with a half-caste heir to an very old, rich family. With comedy combined with serious drama, the story travels through the weird social issues of British upper class and a cannibal from the Torres Straits. Early on in the story, Madame Gilbert moves on from her war work searching for a new adventure. Upon finding a legal person, Roger Gatepath, and the scandal of Lord Topsham, she puts herself in charge of the events. This creates a funny and touching look at who people really are, the issues the classes have, and how society changes.
