A Filbert Is a Nut

"A Filbert Is a Nut" by Rick Raphael is a science fiction story that hilariously unpacks the fine line between brilliance and madness during the nuclear age. Set in a mental institution, it follows Thaddeus Funston, a patient whose innocent clay modeling turns dangerously inventive when he seemingly crafts an atomic bomb. After a mysterious explosion, the military descends, whisking Funston away to recreate his feat. Through dark humor, the story mocks Cold War paranoia, questioning what it means to be sane or a genius when the world itself seems on the brink of lunacy, leading to an ironic ending.
