Summary

"Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile, Volume 2" by James Bruce is a recount of adventures that took place in the 1700s that takes the reader along for discovery to the origins of the great Nile River. As Bruce journeys into Abyssinia, now known as Ethiopia, he uncovers the heart of its culture and history, all while documenting his pursuit of the Nile’s beginning in the second book of the five-part series. Beginning in Book III, the story turns the clock back to the “Annals of Abyssinia,” to tell a historical tale from when Solomon’s reign was restored to the death of Socinianos. The book tells of kings and gives insight to the struggles and political atmosphere of their time. Bruce tells the tales of people and moments to show the reader the struggles within Abyssinia’s history; including religious challenges and wars with neighboring lands, setting the stage and giving backstory needed for Bruce’s journey, marking the passage of time, and digging into the deep heritage of the landscape he passes through.
