How the Garden Grew

"How the Garden Grew" by Maud Maryon is a story that follows Mary, who bravely decides to breathe life back into a garden that has been ignored. The story centers on the theme of change and development, both in the garden that she cultivates and her growth as a gardener. As the story begins, Mary is disappointed with how Griggs who isn't a good gardener, has left the flower beds sad and messy. She then makes a deal with the local religious leader to get money for seeds. This first part of the story really gives the feeling of a serious journey that is also funny, because Mary has to deal with her not-so-great gardener, struggles with the difficulties of gardening, and imagines making a beautiful garden, all while learning how to take care of it.
