Summary

"The Lady in the Car" by William Le Queux is an early 20th-century novel that chronicles the captivating experiences of Prince Albert of Hesse-Holstein as he maneuvers royal expectations, love, and secret adventures, especially his connections with fascinating women from America and Britain. Le Queux explores topics of social class, identity, and the conflict between public image and personal yearnings. The story begins with the Prince in a fancy hotel in Brighton, enjoying a peaceful moment after turning away an unwelcome guest, while he notices that his presence fascinates the other hotel guests, especially the wealthy American duo, Mrs. Jesup and Mary. The Prince's interest in Mary results in a delightful invitation for a car ride, emphasizing their growing bond. At the same time, subtle clues of prior intrigue and shadowy figures create a narrative rich with romance and potential trouble, as the Prince's past and present unexpectedly intertwine.

About the Author

William Tufnell Le Queux was an Anglo-French journalist and writer. He was also a diplomat, a traveller, a flying buff who officiated at the first British air meeting at Doncaster in 1909, and a wireless pioneer who broadcast music from his own station long before radio was generally available; his claims regarding his own abilities and exploits, however, were usually exaggerated. His best-known works are the anti-French and anti-Russian invasion fantasy The Great War in England in 1897 (1894) and the anti-German invasion fantasy The Invasion of 1910 (1906), the latter becoming a bestseller.
