Summary

"The Fourth Book of Virgil's Aeneid and the Ninth Book of Voltaire's Henriad" by Virgil, translated by P. L., is a comparative exploration of love, duty, and destiny through classical and 18th-century lenses. The book presents Virgil's poignant tale of Æneas and Dido, where a queen's passionate love for a Trojan prince clashes with his fated duty, ending in tragedy fueled by divine manipulation. Complementing this is Voltaire's account of Henry IV's love for Gabrielle d'Estrées, highlighting the conflict between his heart and his royal obligations. Both narratives confront readers with the difficult choices between personal desires and greater responsibilities, revealing how fate can overpower human will and desire.

About the Author

Publius Vergilius Maro, usually called Virgil or Vergil in English, was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period. He composed three of the most famous poems in Latin literature: the Eclogues, the Georgics, and the epic Aeneid. A number of minor poems, collected in the Appendix Vergiliana, were attributed to him in ancient times, but modern scholars generally regard these works as spurious, with the possible exception of a few short pieces.
