Summary

The Æneids of Virgil, Done into English Verse by William Morris is an epic poem that recounts the adventures of Æneas, a Trojan hero, traveling from the ashes of Troy to Italy where he's destined to lay the groundwork for a new nation. Facing shipwrecks and divine schemes, Æneas pushes forward, seeking missing comrades and a new path, as he confronts both the raging seas and the looming power of gods like Juno and Venus. His journey, launched amidst a powerful storm, becomes a testament to themes of destiny, hardship, and historical legacies. It presents us the struggles the hero faces to unite his people when the hero is thrown and lost, the narrative evokes feelings of longing, discovery, and tension between what humans desire and what the gods decree.

About the Author

Publius Vergilius Maro, usually called Virgil or Vergil in English, was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period. He composed three of the most famous poems in Latin literature: the Eclogues, the Georgics, and the epic Aeneid. A number of minor poems, collected in the Appendix Vergiliana, were attributed to him in ancient times, but modern scholars generally regard these works as spurious, with the possible exception of a few short pieces.
