"A Backwoods Princess" by Hulbert Footner is a story set in the Northwest Territories during the early 1900's. It centers on a free trader’s daughter named Loseis Blackburn, who is left to deal with a combination of sorrow, romance, and disagreements amongst different people after her father passes away unexpectedly. When the story begins we meet Loseis at Blackburn’s Post, trying to come to terms with the fact that her father is no longer with her. While stuck inside with her maids because of the rain, Loseis is shown as an independent young woman, wearing a mix of bearskin and pearls, showing off her mixed background and the wildness that surrounds her. When news comes that her father has died, it turns her world upside down, and she is unexpectedly put in charge of the Post, where there is friction building between her and the local tribe. As Loseis faces the challenges ahead, she has mixed feelings, including a rivalry with a trader named Gault, and budding feelings for a geologist called Conacher, creating a thrilling tale of strength in a difficult place.
