Summary

"The Monomaniac" by Émile Zola is a story where the dark side of human nature comes to light through Jacques Lantier, a man battling a dangerous obsession with violence that controls his life. The book paints a picture of how this obsession changes everything around him. With other characters like Roubaud and Séverine entangled in a web of jealousy and distrust, the story shows the intense relationships and tensions within their ordinary lives. Set against the backdrop of the Parisian railway in the late 1800s, the book explores the mental states of its characters, especially when Roubaud’s simmering jealousy erupts into brutal violence, setting the stage for a tale of betrayal and psychological depth.
