Summary

"Cosmopolis — Volume 4" by Paul Bourget is a story set in the late 1800s that follows a man named Boleslas Gorka as he deals with tough feelings and hard choices. After being hurt in a fight, Boleslas struggles with love, broken trust, and trying to make up for his mistakes. He is full of jealousy and sadness because of things that happened in the past, and he tries to understand his broken relationships. The book starts with Boleslas recovering from his injuries and thinking about how angry he is at the people who have hurt him. He is even more upset because his wife, Maud, left him when he needed her, and it makes him jealous to think she doesn't care about his pain. The story shows how love, anger, and what society expects from people can clash, suggesting there is more trouble to come.
