Summary

"Poor Relations" by Honoré de Balzac is a story about family connections, envy, and where people stand in society. It mainly follows Cousin Betty, or Lisbeth Fischer, who is very jealous of her prettier cousin, Adeline Hulot. The story looks at how complicated their lives are together, showing the problems and bad feelings that come from different social classes and what happens in families. We see Baron Hulot d'Ervy and his wife, Adeline, whose marriage has problems because the Baron is unfaithful, especially with a singer named Josepha. Lisbeth Fischer, Adeline's cousin, comes in as someone who feels left out and bitter, because she thinks Adeline is more beautiful and important, and she is trying to deal with not being well-known. As problems in the family get worse, chances and betrayals start to happen, setting up the main events of their relationships. It paints a clear picture of Paris in the 1800s and hints at the growing conflict between these tricky characters.
