"Nick of the Woods; Or, Adventures of Prairie Life" by Robert Montgomery Bird is a story placed in old Kentucky, around 1782, where settlers and Native Americans meet, and tough life choices are made. We follow Roland Forrester and his cousin Edith as they start over in the wild after dealing with hard times. When they get to Kentucky, which feels like a military camp because of danger from Native American tribes, Roland, a strong officer, and Edith, full of hope, try to build something new. They meet interesting people like Captain Stackpole and the strange Nick of the Woods. The story takes us on an adventure, looking at family ties and the hard decisions people had to make to stay alive in a scary place.
