Summary

"Tama" by Onoto Watanna is a story set in early 20th-century Fukui, Japan, swirling with mystery and whispers of the supernatural. As the town prepares for the arrival of a foreign professor – the "Tojin-san" – excitement mixes with apprehension, especially concerning legends of a Fox-Woman haunting the region. The professor's arrival sparks a clash of cultures, forcing him to confront deeply ingrained superstitions while he himself becomes captivated by the very folklore causing such unease. This narrative pulls back the curtains on a vibrant, evolving Japan, interweaving cultural clashes, personal trials, and a quest for understanding amid age-old myths.
