Summary

"The Satyricon — Volume 02: Dinner of Trimalchio" by Petronius Arbiter is a story revealing the over-the-top lifestyles of ancient Rome through the eyes of dinner guests at a ridiculously fancy party. The book starts by showing how rich and wild Trimalchio's dinner party is, including weird entertainment and tons of food. Characters, like the person telling the story and his friends, are shocked by the crazy things they see, like a slave with a silver toilet and a painted dog. As the dinner goes on, Trimalchio's loud personality and the silly things the slaves do make fun of how society was set up and how dumb people can be when they have too much money. The story uses humor to highlight the issues in Roman society, accompanied by vibrant descriptions.
