"Dymer" by C. S. Lewis is an early 20th-century narrative poem following Dymer, who is born in the Perfect City, which is a place with lots of rules. This story is about Dymer learning about what life and love really mean and how hard it can be when you choose to go against what everyone else believes. At the start of "Dymer," we meet the main character, Dymer, who is trying to deal with all the rules of where he lives as he figures out who he is. We find out about how he grew up in the Perfect City, where there are lots of rules about how you should feel and who you should be with. When Dymer is in a normal class, he suddenly feels free and does something violent, which makes him run away from the city. As Dymer goes out into nature, he takes off all the things that society expects him to be and enjoys being free in his body and mind. The story suggests that there are many complicated things involved with wanting to be yourself, knowing who you are, and dealing with what everyone else wants, which gets Dymer ready for the adventures and problems he will have later on.
