"Left Tackle Thayer" by Ralph Henry Barbour is a coming-of-age story set at a prep school in the early 1900s. It follows Clinton Boyd Thayer, a new student from down South, as he tries to find his place in a new school while wanting to excel at football. The story looks at how important friendship is, how to adjust to new situations, and how much fun being competitive can be. We meet Clint when he feels lonely and misses home when arrives at Brimfield Academy. While sitting in the stands overlooking the athletic field, Clint meets Amory "Amy" Byrd, a lively student, who becomes his friend quickly. Their discussions bring humor to the story as Amy talks about the school and football. Although, Clint is struggling with feeling out of place, we get to see the chance for friendship and adventure that is waiting for him.
