Summary

"Pioneers in Australasia" by Harry Johnston is a historical narrative that chronicles the age of exploration in the Australasian region, revealing how British influence came to be through grand adventures. It promises to shed light on moments of courage, ground-breaking discoveries, and the cultural mixing that defined the initial encounters in those areas. The story starts by presenting Australasia and describing the many people, geography and the events that shaped its past. Johnston shines a light on the extreme risks taken by the first European trailblazers such as scurvy, the risk of cannibalism, and conflicts with native populations; and also notes the variety of plants, animals, and lands discovered on their journey. The tone of the book creates an image of future sections that will tackle concepts central to exploration, colonization, and interchange between cultures.
