Summary

"Miles Wallingford" by James Fenimore Cooper is a continuation of the saga begun in "Afloat and Ashore," chronicling the ongoing experiences of its central figure, Miles Wallingford. Within its pages, the reader is transported into a world brimming with personal challenges, social observations, and the intricate balance between love and responsibility, all seen through the lens of Miles' evolving life. Opening with a gripping scene where Miles and his crew fight to reclaim their vessel, the Wallingford, the narrative immediately casts a shadow of uncertainty over the protagonist's path. Amidst the chaos of rescue efforts, Miles finds himself contemplating his connection with Lucy, a young woman caught between affections of both himself and Andrew Drewett. This initial drama—filled with heartfelt reunions and the ramifications of tragedy—serves as a launching point, propelling readers toward an exploration of the characters and the societal forces that shape their destinies amid love, allegiance, and the unforgiving nature of maritime existence.

About the Author

James Fenimore Cooper was an American writer of the first half of the 19th century, whose historical romances depicting colonial and indigenous characters from the 17th to the 19th centuries brought him fame and fortune. Cooper became a member of the Episcopal Church shortly before his death and contributed generously to it. He attended Yale University for three years, where he was a member of the Linonian Society.
