Summary

"Tales and Novels of J. de La Fontaine — Volume 19" by Jean de La Fontaine is a set of seventeenth-century stories that use humor and sharp observations to look at love, foolish choices, and how people act. The stories offer clever social commentary on relationships and personal problems. "The Psalter" shares the funny story of a young man's romantic connection with a pretty nun named Isabella, which causes confusion in a convent and shows the conflicting desires and duties within religious life. "King Candaules and the Doctor of Laws" tells of King Candaules' mistake when he allows his servant, Gyges, to see his queen undressed, leading to jealousy, betrayal, and the king losing both his throne and his life. Through these tales, the author skillfully combines storytelling with important lessons about human nature.
