Summary

"He Who Gets Slapped: A Play in Four Acts" by Leonid Andreyev, tells the story of a mysterious man called "He" who escapes a painful past and reinvents himself as a clown in a circus. The play explores what it means to be yourself, how society can mock you, and the fear of being alive, showing how different someone can seem on the outside from how they feel inside. As the play begins, we are shown the circus with all kinds of people, like the clowns Tilly and Polly, the boss Briquet, and Count Mancini, who is the father of Consuelo. The characters get ready for a show one night, revealing the stress and hopes they all have, especially Mancini, who tries to control his daughter, Consuelo, who dances on horses with no saddle. "He," the new clown, mixes jokes with sadness as he deals with who he is now after losing his old life. This first part of the play sets the stage for a tale full of love, wanting to succeed, and the difficult truths of life inside the circus world.
