Summary

"The Village in the Jungle" by Leonard Woolf is a story set in the early 1900's, that takes place in the Sri Lankan village of Beddagama, where life is a constant battle against poverty and the overwhelming jungle. It follows people like Silindu, filled with worry and suffering, his wife Dingihami before she died, and their twin daughters, Punchi Menika and Hinnihami as they try to survive in a menacing jungle. The village deals with problems growing rice, owing money, and the relationships between each other. Silindu, who doesn't talk much but knows the jungle well, struggles after his wife's death and worries about his daughters, as they become young women that long for belonging and togetherness. The novel looks at how people try to survive, their fear of nature, and how much the jungle controls their lives.
