Summary

"The Young Game-Warden" by Harry Castlemon is a tale from the late 1800s that centers on Silas Morgan, a sluggish ferryman whose life is upended by the discovery of a puzzling letter hinting at secret wealth buried in the mountains. The story introduces his family, including his hard-working son, Joe, who recently became a game warden, and his shiftless brother, Dan, who is always looking for an angle. When Silas finds the cryptic letter stashed within a woodpile, it ignites a hunger for wealth, leading him to think about a dangerous journey to find the hidden treasure. As Silas schemes, the relationship between him and his sons comes to light, where Dan’s jealous nature and hatred for Joe create friction, foreshadowing conflicts that will happen as the lives of the Morgans mix with the rich sportsmen in the mountains.

About the Author

Charles Austin Fosdick, better known by his nom de plume Harry Castlemon, was a prolific writer of juvenile stories and novels, intended mainly for boys. He was born in Randolph, New York, and received a high school diploma from Central High School in Buffalo, New York. He served in the Union Navy from 1862 to 1865, during the American Civil War, acting as the receiver and superintendent of coal for the Mississippi River Squadron. Fosdick had begun to write as a teenager, and drew on his experiences serving in the Navy in such early novels as Frank on a Gunboat (1864) and Frank on the Lower Mississippi (1867). He soon became the most-read author for boys in the post-Civil War era, the golden age of children's literature.
