"Kutnar, Son of Pic" by George Langford is an early 20th-century story set in a prehistoric world. It chronicles the journey of Gonch, a clever cannibal known as the Muskman, as he sets out to capture Pic, the famous Mammoth Man and skilled flint-worker. The story strongly suggests themes of staying alive in a dangerous world, the power struggles between primitive tribes, and the interactions between early humans and animals. The beginning of the book introduces Totan, the leader of the Castillan cave-men who is visited by Gonch and his unsuccessful hunting group. Gonch reveals he wants to bring this master craftsman to his tribe, by capturing the Mammoth Man, and tells of a magnificent flint blade made by him that he came across. His dream of bringing this master craftsman to his tribe drives the plot as he gets ready for to go on a perilous journey through dangerous lands, avoiding wolves and other dangers. As he leaves his cave, a feeling of urgency and ambition fills the air, setting the scene for his quest and showing the stakes involved in his and encounter with Pic.
