Summary

"What She Could" by Susan Warner is a story about young girls in a close-knit community figuring out their place in the world. Set in a wholesome home, the novel follows sisters Maria and Matilda as they navigate growing up, being good, and finding their roles in their church. The book begins by introducing the Englefield family and their involvement with Sunday School. After a meeting with Mr. Richmond, the girls are excited to start a "Sunday-School Working Band." Maria eagerly shares her experiences, while Matilda thinks more deeply about things. Their playful talks hint at bigger ideas about faith, duty, and growing as a person, especially through Matilda's changing relationship with Mr. Richmond, who pushes her to face her fears about faith and helping others.
