"Penelope Brandling: A Tale of the Welsh Coast in the Eighteenth Century" by Vernon Lee is a historical fiction set in the 18th century, following Penelope, a Swiss count's daughter, as she marries Eustace Brandling and confronts hidden family secrets and dangerous smugglers on the Welsh coast. Penelope's story begins with her recounting her life for her children, showcasing her happiness in Switzerland, her marriage, and her relocation to Wales, but her husband's brother’s death leads them back to a family home filled with mystery and peril.
