Summary

"Silver Lake" by R. M. (Robert Michael) Ballantyne is a 19th-century novel that follows Robin Gore, a talented hunter, and his family as they seek a freer life in the American wilderness. The story begins with Robin, his loving wife, their children, and friends establishing "Fort Enterprise" as their new homestead. Soon, Robin, his nephew Walter, and his son Roy leave on a hunt showing how ready they are for the dangers of the wild. As winter approaches, they confront not only the challenges of nature but also the looming possibility of conflict with indigenous people shown by the arrival of Wapaw, a starving Indian desperate to reach the fort; so begins a suspenseful tale about the settlers and the native tribes of America.
