Summary

"The History of Emily Montague" by Frances Brooke is a story set in the 1700s. It follows characters as they deal with love, fitting into society, and their own dreams. Edward Rivers is a main character who wants to make a home in Canada, because he thinks it's a beautiful place with lots of chances for a good life. He writes letters to his friends about his plans, his appreciation for his friend John Temple, his feelings about the Canadian countryside, and how people interact with each other. As the story goes on and more letters are exchanged, it becomes clear that there will be romantic relationships, personal goals, and an investigation into people's feelings in colonial Canada. Edward's growing feelings for Emily Montague, even though she is engaged to be married, suggest that there will be conflict and emotional moments as the story develops.
