"King Robert the Bruce" by Alexander Falconer Murison is a historical story about Robert the Bruce, who played a big part in Scotland's fight to be free from England, during the time that Edward I and II ruled. The story looks at ideas like love for one's country, wanting power, and how tricky politics can be, as Bruce becomes important when things are not peaceful. At the start, the book talks about what happened after Sir William Wallace was killed, showing Scotland as if it almost under England's power; however, the story suggests that Scottish people are strong and won't give in, especially with Robert the Bruce appearing. He used to be on the side of the English King but could now lead the fight for Scotland's freedom, with plenty of information about Bruce's family history and how he cleverly played politics early on. This all prepares us for when he says he is the King of Scots and the fights that follow to gain freedom.
