Summary

"Roister Doister" by Nicholas Udall is an early English comedy that tells the story of Ralph Roister Doister, a conceited and silly man who is determined to marry the widow Christian Custance, even though she is already promised to Gawin Goodluck. The play introduces us to Roister Doister and his clever friend Mathew Merygreeke, who adds humor and clever observations to Roister's escapades. Roister, full of confidence but not very smart, makes a plan to win Custance's heart, unaware that she has no interest in him and the play uses joyful conversations and Roister's inflated ego to set a funny and comedic tone, hinting at the amusing troubles to come as he tries to win Custance against all odds.
