Summary

"The Coverley Papers" by Joseph Addison, Budgell, and Steele is a compilation of essays from "The Spectator" that centers on Sir Roger de Coverley, a likeable and odd nobleman from the countryside, whose experiences show the differences between city and country living, along with social and ethical thoughts. The book starts by showing Sir Roger's good-hearted nature, influenced by a past heartbreak. It describes the author's goal to share insights about himself and his fellow club members, especially Sir Roger. Readers discover Sir Roger's unique traits, like his friendly actions towards his workers and renters, and his reputation as a fair landlord. His simple prose style marked the end of the mannerisms and conventional classical images of the 17th century.
