Summary

"A Hero of the Pen" by E. Werner is a story set in 1871, alongside the Mississippi River, where the beautiful Jane Forest, her ailing father, and her admirer, Mr. Alison, face difficult choices about love and duty within the confines of their community. The story explores the heavy burdens and past secrets carried by each of them as they move forward, grappling with what is expected of them and what they truly desire. The novel begins by introducing Jane as she struggles with her father’s impending death in their grand home, while also sharing a secret affection with Mr. Alison, who is soon to travel to Europe. This affection must remain a secret as a sign of respect for her father's condition. The beginning of the novel highlights her internal conflict, balancing a serious and somber attitude with her fondness for Alison. As Jane prepares to honor her father, she must also manage her own hopes for the future. She is also haunted by thoughts of a brother she has never met, which lays the foundation for a story of self-discovery and family secrets.
