Summary

"The Alpine Fay: A Romance" by E. Werner is a story set in the scenic Alps, where a strong-willed landowner, Freiherr von Thurgau, clashes with his ambitious brother-in-law, President Nordheim, over the arrival of a railway. Thurgau is determined to protect his ancestral home, Wolkenstein Court, from what he sees as the destructive march of progress. Nordheim, on the other hand, represents modernization and is set on bringing the railway through the valley. The conflict is not just about land; it touches on themes of tradition versus change, family ties, and the budding romance of Thurgau's daughter, Erna, all set against a landscape facing dramatic transformation.
