"The Plum Tree" by David Graham Phillips is a story about a young lawyer named Harvey Sayler who is trying to make a life for himself in Jackson County. The story shows his journey through challenges, his dreams of being independent, and his relationships, especially with Elizabeth Crosby, whom he loved as a child. Early on, we see Harvey and his mother struggling with money, but they never give up hope. Harvey wants to be more than just a clerk for another lawyer; he wants to be free and successful. But his quest for success gets him caught up in love and politics, testing his values and what he really wants out of life.
