Summary

"Rhyme? and Reason?" by Lewis Carroll is a charming collection of poems and imaginative stories from the late 1800s, demonstrating Carroll's signature style of blending humor, nonsensical situations, and a lively imagination, which sweeps readers into a universe where poetic rhythm and rational thought collide with make-believe. The collection features various works like "Phantasmagoria," and "The Hunting of the Snark," introducing oddball characters and creative narratives; specifically, "Phantasmagoria" opens with a character meeting a timid ghost in his workspace after a tiring day, where, despite his spooky looks, the ghost is revealed to be curious and sincere, explaining the proper manners ghosts must use when haunting people. Their interaction is filled with humor and confusion, creating a feeling of delight as the ghost anxiously tries to share "The Five Good Rules of Etiquette" that guide his ghostly encounters, preparing the way for a delightful study of supernatural happenings mixed with everyday life.

About the Author

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English author, poet, mathematician, photographer and Anglican deacon. His most notable works are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass (1871). He was noted for his facility with word play, logic, and fantasy. His poems Jabberwocky (1871) and The Hunting of the Snark (1876) are classified in the genre of literary nonsense. Some of Alice's nonsensical wonderland logic reflects his published work on mathematical logic.
