Summary

"The Father and Daughter: A Tale, in Prose" by Amelia Opie is an early 19th-century story about a father and daughter torn apart by temptation and societal pressure. The story centers on Mr. Fitzhenry and his daughter, Agnes, whose strong bond fractures when Agnes falls for the flattering words of Clifford, an officer with bad intentions, leading her away from her family. Parental love, personal responsibility, and virtue are major ideas, shown in how Agnes makes bad choices and breaks his heart. The story begins with Agnes questioning her life choices within a bleak landscape, and Mr. Fitzhenry grows weak from the pain of his daughter's actions. This all leads to a deep look at love, loss, shame, and the chance for redemption that comes from Agnes facing the effects of her selfishness.
