Summary

"Atlantis" by Gerhart Hauptmann is a story set in the early 1900s, about a doctor, Frederick von Kammacher, whose life is collapsing as he takes a ship to America. Burdened by a failing marriage, the death of a friend, and his own mistakes, Frederick's voyage becomes a search for a fresh start. He boards the ship, the “Roland," consumed by a letter from his dying friend and his own past failures. Encounters with past acquaintances and a burgeoning passion for a young dancer named Ingigerd Hahlström complicates the journey, turning it into an examination of human desire and the aftermath of choices.
