Summary

"The Deep One" by Neil P. Ruzic is a science fiction story set in the mid-20th century where the last of humanity travels through space searching for a new Earth-like planet to call home. The narrative centers around children, Adam, Eve, Joseph, and Mary who were created using the best traits of their ancestors. Onboard the spaceship "Destiny" the children are raised in an artificial environment called Earth by mechanical parents named the mecs. As they grow up, Adam shows incredible intelligence which makes him different from the others, leading to feelings of being alone and better than everyone else. He struggles with what his uniqueness means and the big responsibility that comes with it. As the story goes on, Adam questions his ties to his cousins and who he is, eventually understanding that connections and working together are needed for humanity to survive in their new home. The children's trip is both a journey to a new planet and an emotional and mental search for understanding in their manufactured world.
