Summary

"The Expositor's Bible: The Second Epistle to the Corinthians" by James Denney is a close look at a letter written to a group of early Christians. It breaks down the messages and explores the reasons why Paul wrote to the church in Corinth. The book explains how the problems in the Corinthian church are dealt with, looking at ideas such as pain, support, and important Christian beliefs. It starts by showing that the two letters to the Corinthians are linked and that understanding the first letter can help one understand the second. Paul had changed his plans to visit because they were upset with his earlier decisions, and he starts to respond to their complaints about him. He also speaks about his own pain and how he found comfort, trying to relate to the Corinthians and strengthen their faith during hard times. Through this, the struggles and spiritual ideas of empathy, support from God, and a renewed faith among Christians are reviewed.

About the Author

James Denney was a Scottish theologian and preacher. He is probably best known today for his theological articulation of the meaning of the atonement within Christian theology, atonement for him being “the most profound of all truths”. Many have misunderstood his position, arguing that he was known for his defense of the doctrine of penal substitution. However, Denney himself protested vigorously against this characterization.
