The story follows Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, also known as the Cid, who is a historic Spanish hero. The book weaves together love, honor, and family conflict. The main characters are the Cid and his love, Ximena. The story starts at when the court of King Fernando I of Castile is celebrating a war victory, Young Rodrigo and Ximena share a moment together and remember their childhood affection for each other; however, their families don't get along because Rodrigo’s father, Diego Lainez, and Ximena’s father, Count de Gormaz don't get along. This leads to De Gormaz resenting Lainez for being friends with the king, which leads to a fight between them. This starts a series of events connecting love, courage, and the search for respect at a hard time.
