Summary

"Jack Tier; Or, The Florida Reef" by James Fenimore Cooper is a story set in the 1800's, full of maritime daring, where Captain Stephen Spike readies his ship, the Molly Swash, for departure, bringing together his mate Harry Mulford, and passengers Rose Budd and her aunt. As the ship prepares to set sail from a Manhattan wharf, Spike's gruff nature hints at trouble, especially concerning Rose's health issues. Suddenly, an old associate, Jack Tier, comes back into Spike's world, promising to bring about big problems. The start of the story is full of tension and adventure, introducing characters with different goals and giving hints about the challenges that lie ahead on the dangerous seas.

About the Author

James Fenimore Cooper was an American writer of the first half of the 19th century, whose historical romances depicting colonial and indigenous characters from the 17th to the 19th centuries brought him fame and fortune. He lived much of his boyhood and his last fifteen years in Cooperstown, New York, which was founded by his father William Cooper on property that he owned. Cooper became a member of the Episcopal Church shortly before his death and contributed generously to it. He attended Yale University for three years, where he was a member of the Linonian Society.
