Summary

"Father Sergius" by Leo Tolstoy is a story about a prince named Stepan Kasatsky, who turns his back on his wealthy life as a prince to become a monk. He does this after he finds out his soon-to-be wife was once with the Emperor. The book explores his journey as a monk, fighting temptation and trying to stay humble as he seeks religious meaning. Ironically, he becomes known for being holy, leading to a struggle with pride, the very thing he was trying to avoid. After falling to temptation, he gives up being a monk, choosing a life helping the poor, finding real faith and purpose by serving others instead of chasing fame.
