Summary

"Thais" by Anatole France is a story set in ancient Egypt. It tells about monks in the Thebaid desert, their simple lives, and how they fight against temptation. Paphnutius, a former sinner turned holy man, can't forget Thais, a gorgeous woman he used to admire. Believing he can save her soul, he sets out on a mission to bring her away from her sinful life. The story looks at the problems saints have, from struggling with their own desires to dealing with visions of good and evil. This book asks big questions about what it means to be good, the power of temptation, and whether someone can truly change.

About the Author
